Centre's proposed data protection law will undermine press freedom: Sunil Mane

Pune, Oct 29 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) state general secretary Sunil Mane on Thursday alleged that the Centre's proposed Digital Personal Data Protection law would undermine press freedom and make it difficult for journalists to protect their sources.
In a statement, Mane said the proposed law could adversely affect journalists, newspaper organisations, television channels and digital media platforms, warning that it could restrict the flow of information to the public.
He said journalists rely on confidential sources to bring important information to light and that protecting these sources was essential for independent journalism. The proposed provisions, he alleged, could compel journalists to disclose their sources and comply with consent-related requirements, thereby discouraging people from sharing information with the media.
Mane claimed that the government was attempting to prevent information critical of its functioning from reaching the public. He said several media organisations and television channels had challenged the law before the Supreme Court.
Referring to media reports on alleged irregularities involving the Election Commission, he said such disclosures were important for public awareness and accountability. He warned that if journalists were forced to reveal their sources, similar information might not reach the public in the future.
Mane said access to information was a fundamental requirement of democracy and called upon journalists, media organisations and citizens to oppose any measures that could restrict press freedom.
He said his party stood with journalists and the public in the fight to protect independent journalism and the people's right to information. UNI SP CDS
