Centre seeks report from Punjab on Gurdaspur attack that left one dead, two critically injured

Chandigarh, Oct 16 (UNI) The union Home Ministry has sought a detailed report from the Punjab government on an attack in Gurdaspur district that left one person dead and two others critically injured amid allegations that the violence was linked to narcotics-related activities.
In a letter dated October 16, addressed to Punjab Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, the ministry referred to reports of an attack on Bikramjit Singh, Nishan Singh and Gurmukh Singh in Mari Panwan village under Sri Hargobindpur police station in Batala tehsil of Gurdaspur district.
Bikramjit Singh died in the attack, while Nishan Singh and Gurmukh Singh sustained critical injuries, according to the communication issued by the ministry's Internal Security-I Division.
The Centre expressed concern over the possible law-and-order implications of the incident and sought a detailed account from the state government.
"It has been alleged that these attacks are related to narcotic drugs," the ministry said in the letter.
"In view of the potential law and order ramifications on this issue in the State, the State Government of Punjab is requested to share a detailed report on the incident," it added.
The communication, bearing reference number 11034/02/2026-IS-IV, was issued by Under Secretary Subodh Kumar Jayasawal with the approval of the competent authority.
A copy was also marked to the Director General of Police, Punjab.
The ministry did not specify a deadline for submitting the report or identify those allegedly responsible for the attack.
The letter also did not provide details about the circumstances leading to the violence or the evidence behind the suspected narcotics connection.
The development comes amid heightened concern over drug-related violence in Punjab, where the killing of anti-drug activist Parwinder Singh, popularly known as Jhota, in Mansa on October 13 has triggered protests.
The Centre has separately sought a factual report from the Punjab government on Jhota's killing and the action taken by state authorities.
The latest communication brings another incident of suspected drug-linked violence under the union Home Ministry's scrutiny.
There was no immediate information in the communication about arrests or the status of the police investigation into the Gurdaspur attack.
