China face-offs still on in Arunachal Pradesh, says ITBP chief; Congress asks why PM Modi is silent

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Face-offs continue at several locations along the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur has confirmed, prompting opposition leaders to question why the Centre has not publicly addressed the latest tensions.
Kapur said the confrontations had occurred in recent days and remained unresolved, despite diplomatic and military-level talks between India and China. His remarks on Thursday provided a rare official acknowledgement of tensions that have persisted in parts of Arunachal Pradesh since July.
The disclosure drew sharp reactions from the Congress, with MPs Jairam Ramesh and Jebi Mather questioning the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Addressing an annual felicitation ceremony for ITBP personnel in Alwar, Rajasthan, Kapur confirmed that border confrontations had occurred at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh and were continuing.
He praised the force’s newly raised Shaurya commandos for their role in dealing with the situation.
The ITBP chief also outlined plans to strengthen the force’s ability to operate in difficult mountainous terrain through specialised high-altitude units, modern weapons, drones and underground shelters at border outposts.
His disclosure came weeks after India and China held Corps Commander-level talks at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point in Arunachal Pradesh on September 6.
Reports of a confrontation near Taksing in Upper Subansiri district first emerged in July. Indian and Chinese patrols reportedly came face to face in the area, prompting efforts to resolve the dispute through military channels.
Despite those discussions, Kapur’s remarks indicate that confrontations along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC) have not ended.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh accused the government of remaining silent over the confrontations while continuing to make concessions to China.
In a post on X, Ramesh said the ITBP chief had acknowledged recent face-offs with China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), despite what he described as a lack of public explanation from the Prime Minister.
Ramesh also referred to the September military talks and claimed that local residents had reported the loss of Indian patrolling points near Taksing.
Expanding his criticism beyond the latest border tensions, Ramesh raised concerns about China’s renaming of locations in Arunachal Pradesh and its plans for a massive hydropower project.
He claimed that a 60,000-megawatt dam being built by China posed risks to India’s ecological and water security.
The Congress leader also pointed to India’s growing trade imbalance with China, claiming that the deficit had reached USD 112 billion in the 2025-26 financial year, compared with USD 99 billion the previous year.
He argued that the dependence on Chinese imports posed a threat to Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Ramesh further criticised the Centre’s handling of earlier India-China border disputes, referring to Prime Minister Modi’s June 19, 2020, remarks following the Galwan Valley clash in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed.
He also cited past remarks by senior military officers concerning China’s alleged role in supporting Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
Demanding greater transparency on national security, Congress chairman of media and publicity Pawan Khera sought a comprehensive account of the ground situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the outcomes of repeated diplomatic engagements with China and the government’s decision to ease specified restrictions on Chinese investments.
Addressing a press conference, Khera said the reported confrontations raised serious questions about the government’s assessment of the security situation and the preparedness of India’s frontline forces. He cited reports attributing to government sources the presence of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) tents near Asaphila and Maja in the Taksing sector of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, allegedly six to seven kilometres inside India’s perception of the LAC.
He questioned how such reports could emerge despite Corps Commander-level talks held at Wacha and Damai in Arunachal Pradesh on September 6.
