People want Kejriwal to explain why Bhagwant Mann violated customs rules: Malhotra

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Friday took a dig at Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating that he has often been in the news for the wrong reasons like entering Parliament and the Assembly after consuming alcohol, and now he has become the first CM in the country to be fined Rs 50,000 under the Customs Act, 1962, the BJP leader claimed.
Malhotra drew the attention of Aam Aadmi Party Convenor Arvind Kejriwal to the reports according to which Punjab CM Mann, while returning from a foreign trip, allegedly attempted to pass through the green channel despite carrying luxury taxable goods, in violation of customs rules.
However, alert customs officials stopped him, inspected his baggage, and subsequently imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on several items, Malhotra added.
The Delhi BJP chief further said that it is beyond comprehension what message Bhagwant Mann wanted to convey to ordinary citizens by allegedly making an unruly attempt to pass through the green channel despite carrying taxable goods.
Sharpening his attack, Malhotra said that the people of the country and Punjab want AAP chief Kejriwal to explain as to why Mann violated customs rules and what taxable goods he was allegedly trying to evade tax on.
Malhotra said that what happened is shameful, adding that the Punjab CM was carrying such goods that he should have declared, rather than trying to move ahead via the green channel.
Customs officers having to check a CM in this manner is not in good taste, and he should have declared the kind of goods he was carrying, the BJP leader said.
