CIFT showcases marine waste recycling technologies; discarded fishing nets turned into value-added products

Kochi, Oct 29 (UNI) The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Kochi, has showcased technologies to convert marine litter, including discarded fishing nets, plastic waste and damaged boat materials, into value-added products ranging from recycled plastic pellets and construction composites to household utility items and decorative articles.
The ‘From Waste to Worth’ exhibition, organised under the institute’s Swachhata Action Plan, highlighted the potential of recycling and reuse technologies to address marine pollution while creating livelihood opportunities through the productive utilisation of waste generated by fishing activities.
A major highlight was the conversion of marine plastic waste into recycled plastic pellets and cementitious composites with potential applications in construction and other commercial sectors. The exhibits demonstrated how discarded plastics could be processed and incorporated into new products, offering avenues for resource recovery and supporting circular-economy practices, subject to appropriate testing and quality standards.
The exhibition featured a diverse range of products made from discarded fishing gear and boat materials, including art and craft items, ornaments, decorative structures, flower pots, paving tiles and injection-moulded products.
Models of a jellyfish made from discarded fishing nets and ropes and a boat crafted from abandoned fishing gear drew attention to the creative reuse of marine waste. Models of fish, sea turtles and other marine organisms further illustrated how abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) could be repurposed instead of contributing to marine pollution.
Products made from discarded fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) boat materials, including flower pots and other decorative and utility articles, were also displayed, demonstrating the scope for recovering useful materials from waste that would otherwise pose disposal challenges.
The initiative aims to promote awareness of the environmental consequences of marine litter and encourage fisherwomen, youth and students to develop practical skills in converting discarded fishing materials into useful and potentially marketable products. By demonstrating accessible recycling methods, the programme seeks to encourage responsible waste management and explore alternative livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
Students from MES Asmabi College, Padinjare Vemballur, visited the exhibition and examined the products developed from marine litter and discarded FRP boat materials.
Dr. Manju Lekshmi N., Senior Scientist in the Fishing Technology Division of ICAR-CIFT, delivered a technical session on the impacts of marine litter and measures to mitigate them.
Dr. George Ninan, Director of ICAR-CIFT; Dr. M. P. Ramesan, Head of the Fishing Technology Division; and Dr. V. Geethalakshmi, Principal Scientist in the Extension, Information and Statistics Division and Nodal Officer of the Swachhata Action Plan, addressed the gathering during the inaugural programme.
