TGCSB warns public against fake Rs 8,000 Diwali Cash Benefit WhatsApp message

Hyderabad, Oct 29 (UNI) The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) on Thursday warned people against a fake WhatsApp message claiming that the Centre is offering an Rs 8,000 Diwali cash benefit to all citizens, cautioning that the link provided could be used to commit cyber fraud.
The fraudulent message, circulated in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urges recipients to click on a suspicious website link to claim the purported benefit, TGCSB Director Shikha Goel said in a press release here.
She said the message was designed to exploit the festive season and mislead people into believing that the government had announced an official cash-benefit scheme.
The link could lead to fraudulent websites seeking personal and banking details, facilitating unauthorised UPI transactions or exposing devices to malicious software, said Shikha Goel.
The public was advised not to click on or forward such messages and to verify government schemes through official websites and authenticated announcements.
People should never share one-time passwords (OTPs), UPI PINs, passwords or bank account details on unverified websites or pay fees to claim benefits advertised through unsolicited messages, she said.
Those who have clicked on suspicious links should avoid entering further information and take steps to secure their accounts and devices.
Victims of unauthorised financial transactions should immediately contact their banks and report the fraud by calling 1930 or through www\\.cybercrime.gov.in, she said.
The TGCSB urged citizens to remain vigilant during the festive season and follow the principle of “Pause, Think, Verify” before clicking links, sharing information or making digital payments.
