Congress holds ‘Chalo Lok Bhavan’ protest in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Oct 8 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Hyderabad on Thursday as Congress leaders and activists staged a ‘Chalo Lok Bhavan’ protest against what they alleged were irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protest, organised under the banner of the Congress and INDIA bloc, began with a rally from the Indira Gandhi statue on Necklace Road towards Lok Bhavan.
Police detained TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Adluri Laxman Kumar, Vakiti Srihari and Mohammad Azharuddin when they staged a protest near Lok Bhavan. They were shifted to Panjagutta police station.
AICC Secretary Sachin Sawant and other Congress leaders were also arrested and shifted to Begum Bazar police station, according to party sources.
Speaking during the protest, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said there were public concerns over alleged discrepancies in the voter-list revision process in various parts of the country. He said the Election Commission had a responsibility to protect the right to vote and maintain public confidence in the electoral system.
Prabhakar demanded the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and urged the Centre and Election Commission to ensure transparency in the electoral-roll revision process.
He also condemned the detention of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and MPs of INDIA bloc parties during their protests in Delhi, describing the action as undemocratic.
The Minister said the Congress would continue its agitation seeking protection of voting rights and democratic and constitutional values. The INDIA bloc had earlier announced the October 8 Lok Bhavan protest as part of its campaign against the alleged irregularities in the SIR process.
