Mumbai, June 5 (UNI) In a setback for the Congress in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, senior leader and former MLA Dilip Kumar Sananda has resigned from the party and announced his decision to join the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on June 12. The joining ceremony will take place in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Sananda, who represented the Khamgaon assembly constituency for 15 consecutive years, is expected to bring along thousands of workers with him, marking a substantial loss for the Congress in the region. This development comes in the backdrop of the shifting political landscape following the 2024 assembly elections, where the Maha Yuti alliance made a strong comeback by winning 232 seats, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi secured only 50 seats.
The Congress has already faced multiple defections in Buldhana, with several leaders moving to the BJP and Shiv Sena. Sananda’s departure further weakens the party’s foothold in the district, especially as the current Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president, Harshvardhan Sapkal, hails from the same region.
The move is being seen as a major blow to the Congress’s efforts to consolidate its position in Maharashtra, as the party grapples with internal challenges and the growing influence of the NCP under Ajit Pawar’s leadership.
