Maha Congress chief Sapkal attacks Yogi Adityanath, says he 'insulted' Shivaji

Mumbai, June 6 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Harshvardhan Sapkal today hit out against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying that Yogi is "telling a false history" that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's guru was Ramdas Swami.
"Ramdas Swami was not Shivaji Maharaj's guru but misinformation is being spread deliberately. This same Yogi Adityanath has insulted Shivaji Maharaj by wearing the Maharaj's jiretope (headgear).
"This jiretope has immense importance, but BJP leaders are continuously insulting Maharaj by wearing the jiretope. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had also worn the jiretope," he said.
(The jiretop is a distinctive type of headgear that Shivaji Maharaj used to wear. Conical in shape and saffron in colour, it has a cultural and symbolic significance associated with Maratha pride and identity. During Shivaji’s rule, the jiretop became a symbol of resistance against foreign rule.)
Sapkal also said that in the Hindavi Swarajya established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, people of all castes and religions had equal status. "This concept of equality of all religions is in the Constitution. Shivaji Maharaj is known as the king. But today, the evil tendencies opposing the ideals behind the coronation of Maharaj are being seen in Maharashtra," said Sapkal.
"These tendencies have raised their heads even during the BJP government. This trend has not been completely eradicated so far, but now we must curb it," he said, addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan.
"During the BJP government, the work of spreading lies about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj is going on. Why is strict action not taken against Koratkar, Solapurkar and Kulkarni who insult the Maharaj? It is infuriating that these trends are supported, provided security and even honored by giving awards in the BJP state, " he said.
