Congress questions Centre over Arunachal transgressions, says BJP leaders normalising Chinese actions

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) The Congress on Friday accused the Narendra Modi government of downplaying Chinese transgressions along the Arunachal Pradesh frontier, after Chief Minister Pema Khandu acknowledged that such incidents had taken place, triggering a fresh political confrontation over the Centre’s handling of the border situation with China.
Congress General Secretary In-charge (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said Khandu’s admission that “no doubt transgression has happened” contradicted his earlier dismissal of reports of Chinese incursions in the Taksing area during the summer. Drawing a parallel with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial 2020 assertion that nobody had entered Indian territory, Ramesh questioned the government’s position on developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The Congress leader took particular exception to Khandu’s reported description of the incidents as routine. The Chief Minister had said, “It keeps happening. It is nothing new,” while maintaining that “the situation is quite normal now”. Khandu had also explained that Indian soldiers sometimes cross over to the other side, while Chinese patrolling parties enter areas claimed by India.
“The most disturbing of all, the CM blames a border that is ‘not defined’. Instead of asserting India’s position, BJP leaders are rationalising Chinese actions,” Ramesh alleged, adding that “nothing about this is normal. This is the new abnormal”.
The Congress' criticism comes amid an official acknowledgement of continuing military friction along the northeastern frontier. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur, while addressing personnel in Alwar, Rajasthan, on October 22, confirmed that face-offs between Indian and Chinese forces had occurred at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh and that some confrontations were still continuing. His remarks, reported the following day, brought renewed attention to the situation along the strategically sensitive border.
The developments also follow Corps Commander-level talks between India and China at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point on September 6, held against the backdrop of reports of tensions in the Taksing area of Upper Subansiri district. The reported confrontations had raised concerns over access to traditional patrolling areas and the presence of Chinese troops in locations claimed by India.
Ramesh also referred to complaints from local residents about the establishment of People's Liberation Army camps on the Indian side of the perceived boundary and the loss of access to certain patrolling points. He linked these concerns to China's repeated renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh and its ambitious hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River at the Great Bend, developments that have remained central to India's strategic concerns over Beijing's activities in the region.
Widening his criticism beyond the border, Ramesh questioned the government's economic and diplomatic engagement with China despite continuing military tensions. Citing a record bilateral trade deficit of USD 112.6 billion, he argued that India's dependence on Chinese imports was hurting domestic manufacturing and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “Make in India has become Import from China,” he charged.
The Congress leader maintained that the issue went beyond individual incidents of transgression and reflected what he described as the BJP leadership's growing tendency to treat Chinese actions as normal. He questioned the apparent contrast between the government's public position on safeguarding the country's territorial interests and its efforts to facilitate greater Chinese investment and economic engagement.
Ramesh also raised questions about Khandu's continuation as Chief Minister, citing a Supreme Court order dated April 6, 2026, directing a CBI inquiry into decisions allegedly taken during Khandu's tenure as Public Works Department Minister between 2015 and 2025. The Congress leader claimed that decisions under scrutiny had reportedly benefited members of the Chief Minister's family to the tune of more than Rs 1,200 crore. These allegations remain subject to the investigation and should be viewed in that context.
He further suggested that Khandu's remarks reflected the broader position of the Prime Minister and the BJP leadership.
The latest political exchange has once again brought the India-China border situation into the national political debate, particularly over the distinction between routine patrolling encounters and transgressions in areas claimed by both sides.
While Khandu has maintained that the situation is normal and that Indian forces are effectively guarding the frontier, the ITBP chief's confirmation of face-offs at multiple locations has renewed questions over the extent of military friction in Arunachal Pradesh and the government's account of developments along the LAC.
