CPI(M) publishes book on Biman Basu to acquaint Gen Z with Bengal's Left movement

Kolkata, Oct 7 (UNI) The CPI(M) has brought out a book on Marxist veteran and Left Front chairman Biman Basu, seeking to introduce the younger generation to the history, politics, struggles and philosophy of the Left movement in Bengal.
Titled "Amader Chairman" (Our Chairman) and published by Shalidhan Prakashan, the book was formally released on Tuesday at the CPI(M) state headquarters, Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan here, by CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim in the presence of several senior party leaders.
Among those present were CPI(M) Politburo member Ram Chandra Dome, Central Committee members Sujan Chakraborty, Abhas Roy Chowdhury, Deblina Hembram, Debabrata Ghosh, Meenakshi Mukherjee and Sumit De, besides state secretariat members Kallol Majumdar and Palash Das.
Although the book primarily focuses on Basu and his long political journey, the party said its broader objective was to preserve and present the history and legacy of the Left movement to a new generation. The book is expected to be available at CPI(M) stalls during the Puja season.
Speaking at the launch, Salim said Communists believed that history and collective experience needed to be preserved for future generations.
"We Communists believe that these things should be preserved. This book has been brought out keeping that objective in mind. Many people have written about their experiences with Bimanda. The politics, history and struggles of that period, as well as the journey of a fighter, have been documented," Salim said.
He alleged that the BJP and the RSS were attempting to erase India's history and heritage. "Reactionary forces destroyed Buddhist monasteries and the Charvaka tradition. We are working to place before the people, particularly the younger generation, our heritage, struggles and history," he said.
CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby and former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar are among several prominent personalities who have contributed their recollections of Basu to the volume.
The party also indicated that the book would be followed by two other projects centred on the veteran Left leader. CPI(M) state committee member Sudip Sengupta said an autobiographical book on Basu and a documentary on his life and political journey were expected to be released by next year's Durga Puja.
The documentary is being directed by filmmaker Kamaleswar Mukherjee.
The publication is being projected by the CPI(M) not merely as a portrait of one of its veteran leaders, but as an attempt to reconnect a younger generation with the ideological and historical traditions of Bengal's Left movement.
