CPI(M)'s Baby hails Lula’s re-election as defeat for politics of hatred and division

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Monday congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his re-election, describing the outcome as a historic fourth presidential term and a source of encouragement for democratic and progressive movements fighting for workers’ rights, social justice and public welfare across the world.
In a post on the social media platform X, Baby congratulated Lula and the people of Brazil, while saluting the Workers’ Party, the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and other progressive and democratic forces that campaigned for his victory.
“Your remarkable campaign showed the world that the politics of hatred and division can be defeated when the people stand united,” Baby said, portraying the Brazilian electoral outcome as a significant message for democratic forces confronting political polarisation and divisive campaigns.
The CPI(M) general secretary said the victory could inspire movements seeking to defend democratic institutions, uphold social and economic rights and strengthen public welfare. He particularly highlighted the role of young people in Brazil’s democratic struggle, saying their participation in demonstrations to defend democracy could energise the younger generation in India as well.
“The youth who took to the streets to defend democracy will reinvigorate our own youth who are fighting the same battle here,” he said, drawing a parallel between democratic movements in the two countries.
Emphasising Brazil’s political sovereignty, Baby declared: “The people have spoken — Brazil is no one’s backyard!” The remark underscored his argument that the electoral verdict represented not merely a change or continuation of political leadership but also an assertion of the people’s right to determine their country’s political direction without external domination.
Baby’s message reflected the CPI(M)’s longstanding emphasis on international solidarity among left-wing and progressive political forces, particularly those advocating workers’ rights, economic equality, social protection and democratic participation. By linking Lula’s electoral success with political developments in India, he sought to present the Brazilian result as an encouragement to movements challenging hatred, division and attacks on democratic institutions.
Lula, a veteran leader of Brazil’s Workers’ Party, has built his political identity around poverty reduction, social inclusion and workers’ welfare. His return to the presidency has placed Brazil at the centre of the wider contest between progressive and conservative political forces in Latin America.
Baby’s congratulatory message therefore framed Lula’s victory as having significance beyond Brazil’s borders, arguing that the mobilisation of ordinary people and young citizens in defence of democracy could offer renewed confidence to progressive movements elsewhere.
