Red alert: 'Arnab' intensifies, to make landfall as 'very severe cyclone' on Wednesday

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) Cyclone Arnab is expected to strengthen into a very severe cyclonic storm by October 27 before making landfall at the Andhra Pradesh coast the following day, the IMD said on Monday, issuing a red alert.
According to the IMD, Arnab, pronounced Ornab, is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday evening and into a very severe cyclonic storm over the same region on Tuesday.
"Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam close to Yanam as a very severe cyclonic storm with the maximum sustained wind speed of 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph by forenoon of 28 October," the weather office said.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain at isolated places, is forecast over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on October 27 and 28.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of these regions on October 29.
"Gale wind speed is likely to increase further with west-northwestward movement of the system, becoming 90-100 gusting to 110 kmph over west-central and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal by 26 October midnight. It would further increase, reaching 115-125 gusting to 140 kmph from afternoon of 27 October till the time of landfall (28 October forenoon)," it added.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said the next three days were extremely crucial and urged people to remain alert and strictly follow safety precautions.
Meaning "ocean" or "sea", the name Arnab has been selected from the pre-approved roster of 169 names maintained by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Cyclones in the North Indian Ocean basin (including the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea) are named following specific parameters and as per the roster with names contributed by 13 member countries, including India, Bangladesh, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan. Names are used one after the other from the predetermined table and are not repeated. The names must be short, easy to pronounce and culturally neutral so they do not cause public distress or offence.
