Cyclone Murasu weakens, IMD warns of very heavy rain in Andhra, Telangana; heavy showers likely across southern states

Panchkula, Nov 4 (UNI) The remnants of severe cyclonic storm Murasu weakened into a depression over Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of both states, with widespread rain expected to continue across southern India over the next several days.
In its morning weather bulletin, the IMD said the system, which had earlier weakened into a deep depression, moved nearly northwards at a speed of 10 kmph during the preceding six hours before weakening further into a depression.
At 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday, the depression was centred over eastern Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh, approximately 30 km northwest of Nandigama, 30 km south of Khammam, 80 km northwest of Vijayawada, 90 km east of Nalgonda and 110 km southwest of Bhadrachalam.
The weather department said the system was likely to continue moving nearly northwards and weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next 12 hours.
Despite the weakening of the system, the IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall was also expected at isolated places in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, and south interior Karnataka.
The department warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph were likely at isolated places in Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Wednesday.
In its broader forecast, the IMD said gusty winds could reach 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday and over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during November 4–7.
Strong surface winds were also forecast over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during November 4–7.
The IMD predicted fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Kerala and Mahe during November 4–8 and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during November 5–8.
Similar rainfall activity was expected over south interior Karnataka during November 4–5 and Lakshadweep during November 7–9.
Isolated heavy rainfall was forecast over Kerala and Mahe, as well as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, during November 4–8.
South interior Karnataka could experience isolated heavy rainfall on November 4 and 5, while Chhattisgarh was likely to witness fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during the same period.
Odisha was expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on Wednesday, with isolated to scattered showers forecast during November 5–7.
The department said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds were likely in several parts of southern and central India.
According to observations recorded between 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday and 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at a few places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
Amaravati in Guntur district recorded 13 cm of rainfall, Vijayawada-Gannavaram in Krishna district received 12 cm; and Kakinada recorded 8 cm.
Visakhapatnam also received significant rainfall during the reporting period.
The IMD warned that heavy rainfall and strong winds could disrupt normal activities, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
"Road and rail traffic may be affected due to heavy rain and squally winds," the department said in its impact assessment.
It also warned of possible waterlogging, localised flooding, reduced visibility, damage to vulnerable structures and standing crops, and disruption of transport services.
The weather department advised people to monitor changing weather conditions, avoid sheltering under trees during lightning and take necessary precautions in areas vulnerable to flooding.
Farmers in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and other affected states were advised to maintain adequate drainage in agricultural fields, protect harvested produce and postpone harvesting or other field operations during intense rainfall.
Meanwhile, the IMD forecast no significant weather activity across northwest, western and northeastern India during the week.
According to its seven-day rainfall forecast, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and both eastern and western Rajasthan are expected to remain dry through November 10.
The department, however, reported the persistence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over northern Haryana and adjoining areas, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.
Despite this circulation, no significant rainfall was forecast over the region.
The IMD said minimum temperatures remained below normal at isolated places in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
Markedly below-normal minimum temperatures were observed at isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh and western Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.
The lowest minimum temperature reported in the bulletin was 11.7 degrees Celsius at Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, while the country's highest maximum temperature was 37.3 degrees Celsius at Veraval in Gujarat.
The weather department said rainfall activity over southern India would gradually become more localised after November 8, with no significant weather warnings issued for November 9 and 10 in its latest seven-day outlook.
