Deepika rewrites Asian Games hockey record with eight-goal blitz

Kakamigahara (Japan), Sept 20 (UNI) Deepika Sehrawat rewrote the Asian Games women’s hockey record books with a stunning eight-goal blitz as India launched their campaign with a crushing 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening Pool B match here on Sunday.
Deepika’s haul was the most goals scored by an individual player in a single women’s hockey match in Asian Games history, turning an already one-sided contest into a personal landmark for the Indian penalty-corner specialist.
India dominated from the opening whistle, spending most of the match inside the Uzbekistan half and producing a relentless stream of attacks. Lalremsiami opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Deepika struck a minute later to start her extraordinary outing.
Deepika found the net in the 8th, 22nd, 25th, 33rd, 36th, 38th, 41st and 54th minutes, repeatedly punishing Uzbekistan from penalty corners with her powerful drag-flicks.
“It’s all thanks to my team because they are making penalty corners, so I was there to be scoring,” Deepika said after the match.
Ishika also completed a hat-trick, while Lalremsiami, Baljeet Kaur, Neha, Navneet Kaur, Lalthantluangi and Sakshi Rana joined the scoring as eight Indian players found the net.
India led 8-0 at half-time and added another 11 goals after the break to complete one of their biggest victories in Asian Games history.
Despite her record-breaking performance, Deepika said India would remain focused on taking the tournament one match at a time, with the gold medal as the ultimate target. “Our main target is to win gold but for now it’s focusing on match to match. I want to make India proud of my team,” she said.
For Uzbekistan, Irina Semyonova described the heavy defeat as a difficult but valuable lesson against a world-class opponent. “India are a world-level team. That’s been a very tough game, and the score is very unpleasant,” Semyonova said.
She added that facing a top side would help Uzbekistan identify areas for improvement. “Such games show what we should aim at and work on. They add a lot to our experience and our career,” she said.
