Delhi Police says Congress rally permission intact, opposition alleges hurdles to preparations

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Delhi Police has not withdrawn permission granted to the Congress for its proposed rally at Ramlila Maidan, police sources said on Tuesday, amid allegations by the Opposition that preparations for its planned protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had been obstructed.
“There is no change in the permission that was earlier granted,” police sources said, clarifying that the approval for the rally remained valid. On the proposed mock Parliament at Hotel Ashok, the police said the matter depended on the hotel, as the premises are privately owned.
The clarification came after All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal alleged that police personnel had stopped workers from setting up infrastructure for the INDIA bloc’s proposed public impeachment-style proceeding against Kumar, despite the organisers having secured permission to use Ramlila Maidan.
Venugopal said the Congress had been granted permission to use the ground from October 25 to November 3, but preparations were halted over the weekend. He accused the government of attempting to prevent the Opposition from raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Venugopal said 21 INDIA bloc parties had initially planned to organise the event at Hotel Ashok, but permission for the programme there was denied, following which the alliance decided to pursue Ramlila Maidan as an alternative venue. The Congress has alleged that preparations at the latter site were subsequently obstructed.
The party has warned that it would intensify its agitation if prevented from holding the programme. Venugopal said the Opposition would consider staging demonstrations outside the residences of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister if its protests continued to face restrictions.
Police officials had earlier explained that the Congress approached them after obtaining a venue availability certificate from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which owns Ramlila Maidan. The police issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC), while completion of the booking process rests with the civic body.
Ramlila Maidan is among the designated venues for protests and demonstrations in the national capital, along with Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi, following the de-notification of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site.
