Rahul Gandhi vows to continue SIR agitation until CEC resigns or Modi removes him

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, accused the Election Commission of India of facilitating the systematic deletion of genuine voters from electoral rolls, alleging that “vote chori” was taking place “from the top level”.
Declaring that the Opposition would not relent in its campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he said the agitation would continue until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigned or Prime Minister Narendra Modi removed him from office.
Addressing a public hearing titled ‘Vote Adhikar Jeene Ka Adhikar’ at Block 20 in Trilokpuri, east Delhi, Gandhi alleged that the revision exercise was being used to deprive poor citizens of their constitutional right to vote. Citing the alleged deletion of 416 voters’ names from just four polling booths in Trilokpuri, he argued that the issue went beyond administrative discrepancies and raised serious questions about electoral integrity and the protection of citizens’ democratic rights.
The public hearing brought together residents who complained of wrongful deletions and discrepancies in electoral rolls, seeking to highlight the consequences of the SIR exercise for ordinary voters. Gandhi’s message was that the right to vote was not merely a means of choosing a government but a fundamental pillar of democratic participation and the ability of citizens to exercise their political rights with dignity.
Launching a sharp attack on Kumar, Gandhi alleged that the removal of genuine voters was part of a wider pattern rather than a series of isolated errors. He questioned the integrity of the revision process and accused the authorities of allowing the names of eligible electors, particularly those from economically vulnerable sections, to be struck off the rolls.
The Congress leader’s ultimatum signalled that the Opposition intends to sustain its confrontation with the Election Commission, making electoral transparency and institutional accountability central to its campaign. His demand that Kumar either resign or be removed by Modi also sharpened the political dimension of the dispute, placing the Chief Election Commissioner’s role at the centre of the Opposition’s protests.
CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya and Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav were among those who joined Gandhi at the public hearing, underlining the participation of political and civil society figures beyond the Congress in the campaign against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
The Trilokpuri hearing formed part of the Opposition’s broader effort to bring complaints about voter deletions into the public domain and demand accountability from the Election Commission. By inviting residents to recount their experiences, the organisers sought to connect the national debate over SIR with the difficulties faced by individual electors who fear that discrepancies in official records could deprive them of their franchise.
The allegation that 416 names had been deleted from four polling booths placed the spotlight on the potential local impact of electoral roll revisions. While the Election Commission is responsible for maintaining accurate voter lists and removing duplicate entries and the names of deceased or otherwise ineligible persons, allegations of wrongful deletion have fuelled demands for greater transparency, effective grievance redressal and adequate opportunities for eligible citizens to establish their voting rights. The specific claims made at the hearing would need to be verified against the relevant electoral rolls and official records.
The Election Commission derives its constitutional mandate to supervise, direct and control elections from Article 324 of the Constitution. Accurate electoral rolls are essential to the discharge of that responsibility, but the process of revising them must also ensure that eligible voters are not unfairly excluded. The procedures for additions, deletions and corrections are intended to maintain the integrity of the rolls while providing mechanisms through which affected electors can seek redress.
The SIR exercise has emerged as a major political flashpoint, with the Opposition alleging that the revision process risks excluding genuine voters and demanding greater accountability from the poll panel. The Election Commission’s responsibility to ensure accurate rolls and the Opposition’s concerns about wrongful exclusions have consequently become central to a wider dispute over electoral fairness.
For Gandhi, the Trilokpuri hearing was both a platform to amplify individual grievances and an opportunity to intensify the political campaign against the revision exercise. By linking alleged voter deletions to the constitutional right to vote, he sought to portray the controversy as a question of democratic rights rather than merely an administrative exercise.
His declaration that the agitation would continue until Kumar resigned or was removed by the Prime Minister made clear that the Opposition has no immediate intention of backing down. With local complaints being brought into the public domain and demands for accountability growing louder, the dispute over SIR is set to remain a prominent issue in the Opposition’s campaign against alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
