Delhi to add 150 electric buses, take zero-emission fleet to 5,238

New Delhi, Oct 12 (UNI) The Delhi government will induct 150 new electric buses into its public transport fleet and inaugurate five public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the capital, as it expands its clean mobility infrastructure.
The new buses will take Delhi’s electric bus fleet to 5,238, out of a total fleet of around 6,988 buses, comprising 1,750 CNG buses, according to an official statement issued on Monday.
The five charging stations have been established at Swami Vivekanand Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Anand Vihar and four Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) depots at Nand Nagri, Rohini Sector-37, Nangloi and Keshopur.
Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the expansion of electric buses and charging facilities was aimed at making public transport cleaner and more efficient.
“Delhi is steadily expanding its electric bus fleet and charging infrastructure to build a cleaner, more efficient and future-ready public transport system for its citizens,” Singh said.
The induction of the new buses is part of the government’s broader plan to increase the city’s overall bus fleet to nearly 14,000 by the financial year 2028-29, strengthening public transport capacity while reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The newly inducted low-floor, air-conditioned buses are equipped with passenger safety and convenience features, including CCTV cameras, panic buttons, real-time tracking systems and accessibility provisions for persons with disabilities.
The government said the initiative, being undertaken under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership, would improve commuter convenience while supporting the transition towards energy-efficient urban transportation.
“The induction of 150 new electric buses and the expansion of public EV charging infrastructure represent important milestones in Delhi’s journey towards clean and sustainable mobility,” the transport minister said.
“By strengthening both public transport services and the supporting charging network, the Delhi Government is working to make urban travel more comfortable, efficient and environmentally responsible. Our focus is on building a robust, future-ready transport system that serves the needs of commuters while advancing the vision of a greener Delhi,” he added.
The charging facility at Anand Vihar has been developed by the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (DTIDC). Anand Vihar ISBT is a major interstate transport hub, handling approximately 2,300 buses and catering to around 1.25 lakh commuters daily.
The buses operating through the terminal include services run by the DTC, Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, Uttarakhand Transport Corporation and vehicles operating under the All India Tourist Permit category.
Separately, the DTC has set up public EV charging facilities at its depots in Nand Nagri, Rohini Sector-37, Nangloi and Keshopur. Additional high-capacity charging stations are under construction at other DTC locations to expand the network further.
The government said the expansion of charging infrastructure would support the growing number of electric buses as well as other electric vehicles, while improving access to public charging facilities across the city.
With the latest induction, Delhi’s electric bus fleet will account for the bulk of its existing public transport bus fleet, as the government pursues its target of expanding bus availability and promoting cleaner mobility over the coming years. PWS CDS
