Aizawl, June 30 (UNI) Dr K Beichhua, a seasoned legislator and former minister, has taken over as the new president of the BJP Mizoram Pradesh.
His election was formally announced by Vanathi Srinivasan, BJP Mahila Morcha chief and National Returning Officer for the party’s organisational elections in the state.
The declaration was made on Monday at a function held at Atal Bhavan, the party’s state headquarters in Aizawl. According to Delson Notlia, Mizoram's state returning officer, the internal election was conducted by consensus a day earlier in the presence of BJP’s Mizoram in-charge, Devesh Kumar.
Vanlalhmuaka, who demitted office as state party president, and Phillip Vanlalmawia John, a state council member, were also elected to represent Mizoram in the BJP’s national council.
Beichhua, currently the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party in the 40-member state Assembly, brings with him a blend of political acumen and a long career in medical service.
A three-time MLA from Siaha constituency, the 57-year-old was first elected on an MNF ticket in 2013 and retained his seat in the 2018 and 2023 polls. He joined the BJP last year after parting ways with the MNF.
His political career includes a five-year tenure as Minister of State in the Mizoram government (2018–2023), during which he handled key departments such as Social Welfare, Excise & Narcotics, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, and Sericulture.
Born on December 19, 1966, in Siaha town, Beichhua is a medical doctor by profession. After serving as a government Medical Officer from 1992 to 2008, he went on to lead hospitals in Lawngtlai and Siaha, including the Maraland Gospel Centenary Hospital which he established in 2005 to provide affordable healthcare to remote areas in southern Mizoram.
His supporters credit him with a people-centric approach to both medicine and politics, and see his elevation as part of the BJP’s strategy to broaden its base in Mizoram.
State returning officer Delson Notlia described Beichhua’s appointment as timely.
“His vast experience in administration, social sectors and grassroots work will strengthen the party’s outreach in the state. He represents a leadership style that values both development and local identity,” Notlia said.
