Early onset of monsoon in HP likely by June 20–21

Shimla, June 18 (UNI) The Southwest Monsoon is advancing faster than usual and is likely to cover many parts of Himachal Pradesh by June 20 to 21, about a week ahead of its typical onset date, the weatherman said today.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the favourable conditions are in place, driven by changing climatic factors such as a transition from El Niño to La Niña, an active Madden-Julian Oscillation, and a western disturbance currently hovering over Punjab and adjoining regions.
As per Wednesday’s data, light to moderate rain continued in many parts of the state, further cooling the region after a long heat spell. The highest rainfall was recorded in Sundernagar (5 mm), followed by Bhuntar and Gohar (3 mm each), Mandi, Banjar, Rohru, Sarahan, Seobagh, and Jogindernagar (2 mm each), and Kasauli, Manali, Baijnath, and Keylong (1 mm each). The IMD has issued an orange alert from June 23 onwards, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, particularly in mid-hill and low-hill areas.
The monsoon is expected to be aggressive during its onset and maintain consistency over the next three months, with rainfall projected to be around 106% of the long-period average (LPA) — categorised as above normal.
Minimum temperatures on Wednesday were reported as 16.6°C in Shimla, 18.6°C in Una, 9.8°C in Kukumseri and Keylong, and 21.8°C in Mandi and Kangra, indicating a gradual cooling trend due to sustained cloud cover and rainfall.
The IMD forecast suggests light to moderate rainfall from June 18 to 19, while June 20 to 24 may see widespread rain, including heavy spells on June 20, 21, and very heavy spells on June 22 and 23. Temperatures are likely to rise by 2–4°C in the next 48 hours, followed by a drop of 3–4°C due to cloud activity and showers.
Farmers and local authorities have been advised to take necessary precautions against flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, especially in vulnerable districts like Mandi, Kullu, Solan, Kangra, and Lahaul-Spiti. The early onset is expected to benefit agriculture and water reserves, provided the rainfall remains well-distributed and manageable. UNI ML SSP
