Energy consumption increased 12 times in last 20 years in Bihar

Patna, June 18 (UNI) With increasing demand of electricity in Bihar, the energy consumption has increased 12 times in last 20 years in the state, official sources said today.
The sources associated with the Energy department said here that in 2005, 700 MW of electricity was consumed which increased to 9428 MW by June 2025. In 2012, 1 thousand 751 MW and in 2014, 2 thousand 831 MW of electricity consumption was recorded.
In view of rising electricity demands, it has been decided to use the renewable sources of power, informed the sources.
According to the sources, per capita energy consumption in the state has increased by almost 5 times in the last 20 years.
In 2005, the energy consumption per person was 75 kilowatt, which is estimated to have gone up to 363 kilowatt in 2025. In 2012, the per capita energy consumption was 134 kilowatt and in 2014 it increased to 160 kilowatt.
Similarly, the number of consumers also increased 12 times, said the sources adding that the number of consumers in the state in 2005 was 17 lakh which increased to 2 crore 14 lakh in 2025. There were 38 lakh consumers in 2012 which went up to 43 lakh in 2014.
Outlining the availability of electricity, the sources said that electricity supply on an average was maintained for 22 to 24 hours. However, the scenario was bleak in 2005 when only 10 to 12 hours of electricity was available in urban areas and 5 to 6 hours in rural areas.
Speaking about rural electrification, the sources said that the number of electrified villages which were only 14 thousand 20 prior to 2005 increased to 39 thousand 73.The number of electrified villages in the state is expected to increase to 1 lakh 6 thousand 249 in 2025. UNI RS SSP
