Ex-DMK Min Anbil Mahesh Rs 100 cr school fraud case : Morning AB dismiss, evening arrest, late night remanded in judicial custody

Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI) On a day of fast paced developments, senior DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested in the Rs 100 crore private school fraud case on Monday evening after the Madras High Court nixed his advance bail plea in the morning and eventually remanded in judicial custody till November six early this morning.
He was the first ex-DMK Minister to be arrested in a corruption case after the TVK government headed by Chief Minister Vijay assumed office in May and started digging into various corrupt activities involving former Ministers during the previous DMK regime.
Hours after his anticipatory bail plea was dismissed in the morning, the Chennai Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested him from an apartment in the evening and after preliminary questioning for a couple of hours at the office of the Chennai police commissionerate
and subjecting him to medical tests at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, he was produced before a Special Court Judge Sathyamoorthy trying DVAC cases in the night and remanded in judicial custody till Novemebr six, after intense arguments between the prosecution and defence that lasted close to three hours.
He was later escorted to the Puzhal Central prison amid tight security.
Meanwhile, in a press release, police said the arrest was based on the material evidences collected during the raids conducted at Anbil's locations and those connected with him. One of the key aspect was that one Muthukumar, who was cited as the second accused in the case, was still absconding, though unconfirmed reports said his whereabouts were known to the ex-Minister.
Earlier, dismissing his advance bail plea, Mr Justice V.Lakshminaryanan observed that the ex-Minister was not an ordinary person and was politically influential who could tamper with the evidences. The Judge also said considering the huge involvement of money trail in the name of party funds (an euphemism for corruption coined by the present regime), which the police claimed as "financial terrorism", the beneficiaries could be identified only by interrogating the ex-Minister.
Hence, accepting the police submissions, his advance bail plea was dismissed as the investigations were at a preliminary stage, the Judege said, following which, the CCB police arrested him.
After extensive questioning for close to four hours, he was taken to the government hospital for a complete medical check after which he was produced before a court and remanded in judcial custody.
Emerging out of the hospital, Anbil todl reporters that he had fully cooperated with the investigation and that he would face the case as per law and would prove his innocence.
Meanwhile, DMK President and former CM M.K.Stalin, his son and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin strongly condemned his arrest and termed it as politically motivated
to hide its adminstrative failures and the deteriorating law and order situation, citing the alleged spiralling crime graph rate.
