Fake marriage profiles, cash demands: Sirsa police warn marriage partner-seekers of fraud

Sirsa, Oct 19 (UNI) People seeking marriage partners online or through intermediaries risk losing lakhs of rupees to fraudsters using fake profiles, false claims of prestigious jobs and staged marriages, Sirsa police have warned, urging families to verify identities before paying money or committing to a match.
In a public advisory, Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan said gangs operating in Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan were exploiting marriage seekers through matrimonial websites, social media and local intermediaries.
“Do not rush into a decision as important as marriage or trust an unknown person or intermediary without verification,” Saharan said.
According to the advisory, some gang members pose as village-level marriage brokers and collect unmarried men’s biodata through WhatsApp groups. They then demand between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh to arrange a marriage.
In the pattern described by police, the purported bride subsequently seeks gold jewellery, expensive mobile phones, clothes and other valuables. She later leaves on the pretext of visiting her parental home, taking cash and valuables, then switches off her mobile connection and breaks contact.
Online fraudsters use fake matrimonial and social media profiles to win trust, sometimes claiming to be IAS or IPS officers, CBI officials, professors or other senior professionals, Saharan said.
After developing an emotional relationship, they seek money for purported emergencies, expensive gifts, travel or other expenses.
Police cautioned that photographs, impressive job titles and attractive profiles should not be treated as proof of identity or credibility.
Before finalising a match, families should verify the prospective partner’s identity, permanent address, family background and available documents. They should also establish an intermediary’s credentials before making any payment.
Marriage seekers were advised to preserve WhatsApp conversations, photographs, phone numbers and payment records as potential evidence.
Anyone defrauded should immediately inform police through 112.
