Filmmaking as human archive, audience interpretation discussed at IDSFFK

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 27 (UNI) The role of cinema in documenting society, preserving collective memory and representing communities came under discussion at a 'Face to Face' session held at Kairali Portico on the third day of the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) here.
Filmmaker Krishnakant Mishra said films should serve as an archive of their times, enabling people decades later to look back and understand the social realities in which they were created.
He also stressed the responsibility of filmmakers in representing people and communities, while maintaining space for audiences to interpret and engage with what they see on screen.
The discussion also focused on identity, language and representation in cinema. Aayushka Churi spoke about the limited representation of Konkani voices in Indian cinema and said her film's exploration of the idea of home was inseparable from Konkani language and culture.
Shijin V, while discussing his film 'Globe' on an indigenous community, reflected on issues relating to land and livelihood. Though rooted in the experiences of a particular community, the film's concerns have a wider human and global relevance, he said.
The filmmakers also discussed the relationship between creators and audiences. Churi observed that a film is a collaborative effort between the filmmaker and the audience, with viewers bringing their own experiences and interpretations to the work.
The session was moderated by Dr Rajesh James. The panel comprised Siddharth More, Samujjal Kashyap, Vipin Varghese, Ramith Kunjimangalam, Jeevan Shaji, Shaanib Bakshi, Sreehari Rajesh, Muhammed Jazeel K, Aayushka Churi, Sandhya Raju, Shyam Maheswari, Shijin V and Krishnakant Mishra.
