FIR registered against protesters in Mansa over alleged snatching of Daljit’s body

Naresh Kumar
Mansa, Oct 29 (UNI) Mansa police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with an incident in which a group of protesters allegedly took away the body of Daljit, a 35-year-old farmer who allegedly died due to drug overdose, triggering a confrontation with police personnel.
According to the police, a group of 30-40 armed men allegedly snatched the body and attacked the police team when personnel tried to stop and persuade them.
A police constable, Kuldeep Singh, sustained a head injury after being allegedly hit with an iron rod.
However, the protesters and the deceased’s family have accused the police of forcibly taking the body into their custody.
They claimed to possess video footage of the incident to support their allegations.
The protesters said they wanted to take Daljit’s body to a protest site in Mansa, where a sit-in was underway in support of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota.
Daljit’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, along with other protesters, alleged that the police were repeatedly harassing them and had forcibly taken the body away.
According to the police, senior officers and a police team attempted to stop the group of 30-40 people, allegedly armed with gandasis and swords, who attacked them.
The police further alleged that the attackers attempted to ram vehicles into police personnel, tore the uniform of a policeman and struck constable Kuldeep Singh on the head with an iron rod.
The injured constable was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital in Mansa for treatment.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagdeep Singh of Mansa City-1 police station visited the hospital and recorded the injured constable’s statement.
On the basis of the statement, police registered a case against unidentified persons under Sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132, 221 (obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties), 121(1), 121(2), 191(3), 190 and 301 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police officials said efforts were underway to identify the accused and arrest them soon. Officials also said Daljit’s post-mortem examination had been conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital Bathinda.
The family has refused to perform the cremation until the body is returned and an independent investigation into the region's drug menace is conducted.
