Five killed, roads cut off as landslides ravage Mizoram

Aizawl, May 31 (UNI) Unrelenting monsoon rains lashing Mizoram since Thursday have wreaked havoc across the state, claiming five lives, toppling at least 18 buildings, and cutting off key roads in the southern and eastern regions due to widespread landslides and mudslides, officials said on Saturday.
In Vaphai village near the Myanmar border (Champhai district), a major landslide struck around 4:15 AM Saturday, burying an Assam-type house sheltering refugees from Myanmar.
Three members of the family — Lenkhuaithanga (71), his daughter Lalneihthuami (48), and daughter-in-law Lalramniengi (34) — were killed on the spot, according to Vaphai Village Council President Johny Rengkhuma. Two others, Lalneihthuami’s son Pekhmingthanga (28) and a guest, Lalzama, both also refugees, managed to escape but were injured. Both hail from Vutbuak village in Myanmar’s Chin state. The injured were transported to Champhai district hospital.
In Serchhip town, central Mizoram, Ramzolura (55) died and his wife Zaii was injured after a landslide brought down a house belonging to Ramzolura’s sister, Zomuani, early Saturday. Reports indicated that seven houses were swept away, while National Highway-54 between Serchhip and Aizawl became impassable due to mud and debris.
Further south in Lawngtlai town along the Myanmar border, two Rakhine nationals were trapped when the hotel they were staying in collapsed late Friday night. Rescuers — including Young Lai Association (YLA) volunteers, police, Assam Rifles, and disaster management teams — succeeded in pulling one survivor from the debris, while efforts were ongoing to rescue the second person, who was reportedly still alive. Five completed buildings and two under-construction structures were destroyed by landslides in Lawngtlai.
In Aizawl’s Thuampui locality, a 37-year-old man was killed and his 35-year-old companion injured when their temporary shelter was crushed by a collapsing stone retaining wall early Friday morning.
Elsewhere, one building each in Zote (Champhai district) and New Chalrang (Khawzawl district) was fully destroyed, though no injuries were reported.
Authorities are evacuating residents in several areas threatened by landslips, landslides, rockfalls, and flash floods. Across Mizoram, power supply has been severely affected, with fallen electric poles, snapped lines, and damaged substations plunging many areas — including parts of Aizawl — into darkness. Mobile and telecom services have also been disrupted, particularly in remote villages.
Flooding has hit low-lying areas hard. In Sairang near Aizawl, the swelling Tlawng River forced a family to evacuate, with two others preparing to leave. In Tlabung, Lunglei district, local leaders are coordinating the relocation of families living along the Khawthlangtuipui (Karnaphuli) River as water levels rise steadily.
According to the State Disaster Management & Rehabilitation (DM\\\\&R) department, as of Saturday afternoon, landslides had been reported at 113 locations, 49 buildings were fully or partially damaged, 17 homes were abandoned, 33 road sections were blocked, 16 retaining walls collapsed, and two rockfall incidents were recorded, alongside reports of a sinking zone and flash floods.
DM\\\\&R Minister Prof. Lalnilawma spent Saturday at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Aizawl, monitoring real-time updates from district-level emergency centres. Officials said a fuller picture of the destruction would emerge in the coming days as assessment teams complete their work.
