Flood waters enter Assam's famed Kaziranga National park

Guwahati, June 4 (UNI) The first wave of floods in Assam this year has affected the Kaziranga National park, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Park officials said on Wednesday that the flood waters have submerged some areas under Burhapahar and Bagori ranges of the park, affecting wildlife.
"At least 50 anti-poaching camp have been submerged inside the park due to surging waters of the river," said a park official while pointing that the situation is however under control as it is not high floods.
Park director Sonali Ghosh told UNI that although the flood water has entered the park it is not alarming.
She, however, said that the animal movement has started inside the park after the flood.
The UNESCO World Heritage site has over 2,600 one-horned rhinos, tigers and many other wildlife.
The park is known for "big five", which includes one-horned rhinos, elephants, royal Bengal tigers, wild water buffalos and Eastern swamp deer.
While the animals normally take shelter on higher grounds during the floods, they migrated to the Karbis hills nearby during the high floods.
With the animal movement having started in the park, the park officials have put up speed breakers and caution warnings on the National Highway 37 that bifurcated the Park and the Karbis Angling hills.
Park officials further said that the forest patrols have also been intensified due to the floods and the villagers in the fringe areas have been sensitised to inform the forest officials in case they see any distressed animals.
