Former Kerala CM VS Achuthanandan remains in ICU

Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (UNI) The condition of CPI(M) veteran and former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SUT Hospital, remains unchanged, according to the medical bulletin issued today.
He was admitted to the hospital on the morning of June 23 following a heart attack, shortly after returning home from his routine check-up on June 22.
The medical bulletin states that efforts are ongoing to stabilise his heartbeat and respiration with the support of life-saving equipment.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several others visited the hospital to enquire about V.S. Achuthanandan’s health. Since they were unable to meet him directly, they spoke with doctors and family members to get an update on his condition before leaving.
According to hospital authorities, a team of expert doctors is working tirelessly to maintain his breathing, blood pressure, and kidney functions with the help of various life-support systems.
His treatment is being closely monitored and managed by a team of specialists from multiple departments.
VS Achuthanandan, also known as Fidel Castro of Kerala, was the Chief Minister of the state from 2006 to 2011. He served as the chairman of administrative reforms in Kerala with state cabinet rank from 2016 to 2021. He was also a former 3-time Leader of the Opposition of the Kerala Assembly.
He entered politics through trade union activities and joined State Congress in 1938. In 1940 he became a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He is the only living Keralite among the 32 members who left the CPI National Council in 1964 to form the CPI(M).
During his 40 years as a politician, he was imprisoned for five years and six months and was in hiding for four and a half years. He was the secretary of the party's Kerala State Committee between 1980 and 1992.
