Former Meghalaya CM raises concerns over unabated influx, volatile border disputes

Shillong, Oct 28 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dr Mukul Sangma has raised serious concerns over the unabated influx of illegal immigrants and domestic migrants into the state.
Talking to reporters after the State Security Commission meeting on Wednesday, the former Chief Minister said the issue has been a subject of intense debate among various stakeholder groups, reflecting a collective resolve shared by the public and political parties alike to protect the state's demography.
Sangma noted that his government had introduced the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act specifically to tackle the influx issue, emphasising that the law must now be properly enforced according to its original vision and intent.
“The challenge now lies in ensuring its proper enforcement and understanding its applicability from diverse perspectives, keeping in view the original concept and intent debated and passed by the Assembly," he stated.
On the long-standing border dispute with Assam, the former Chief Minister urged both states to maintain joint political and bureaucratic accountability, noting that border stability hinges on strategic governance.
“We have shown in the past that when these authorities are encouraged to be proactive rather than reactive, we are able to ensure stability and peace along the inter-state boundary," Sangma said.
Sangma also highlighted the plight of residents along the international boundary with Bangladesh, pointing out that border fencing has triggered the de facto alienation of local property by cutting off access to a 150-yard strip of "no-man's land" outside the wire fence.
“While there is no legal transfer of property, there is an effective alienation of land because our people can no longer utilise their own fields outside the fencing," he explained.
The Leader of Opposition urged the state government to immediately take up the matter with the central government to secure necessary financial relief and institutional support for the affected landowners. UNI RRK CDS
