Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan's sisters Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi detained for 30 days prior to planned Sep 27 march

Islamabad, Sep 21 (UNI) Former Pakistan prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan's sisters Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were detained for 30 days on Monday, days before the party's planned September 27 countrywide protest and march to Islamabad. The detention of both women was ordered under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960, according to Dawn.
The move followed the detention of Imran's other sister, Aleema Khan, on Sunday after Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz ordered her detention or arrest for 30 days under the same law. The three sisters' preventive detentions have since been challenged before the Lahore High Court.
The detentions came amid a reported crackdown on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ahead of its September 27 protest, which the party has called for Imran Khan's release and what it describes as the supremacy of the Constitution.
According to Dawn, an order dated September 20 from the Lahore DC office said Uzma and Noreen should be detained for 30 days because they were considered "prejudicial to the public safety and maintenance of public order".
The order alleged that the two had been involved in the May 9 protests and had motivated PTI workers to damage public and government property. It also accused them of using social media and public meetings to mobilise workers, raise what the authorities described as objectionable slogans and create a law-and-order situation.
The order cited multiple cases, including case 96/23 registered at Race Course police station, and described the sisters as potential threats to public peace and tranquillity.
The detention decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Lahore Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz on Sunday, where members endorsed evidence presented by police. The order said the DC believed that the presence of Uzma and Noreen in public could pose a serious threat to public safety and lead to a breach of public order.
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram accused Punjab police of arresting both women along with relatives in the early hours of Monday. The party said family members had been placed in an armoured vehicle and taken to an undisclosed location.
PTI condemned the action as an abuse of authority and political victimisation, while Imran Khan's son Kasim Khan alleged that his aunts and cousins had been taken from their homes without an explanation and described the detentions as an "abduction".
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also criticised the detentions, saying further arrests of party lawmakers and family members would intensify political tensions.
"We do not need further confrontation, rather an end to political tensions," Gohar said, calling for the state to change course.
The detention of Aleema Khan on Sunday had already prompted protests from PTI and opposition groups. Her sister Noreen said Aleema had been taken into custody after leaving her home with her driver and that the family later learnt that her vehicle had been found at a police station. Police sources subsequently confirmed that Aleema had been taken to Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail.
The detentions have coincided with other actions against PTI figures in Punjab. Sahiwal police arrested former municipal corporation mayor and former PTI ticket-holder Asad Khan Baloch and PTI city president Muhammad Shahid Chohan late on Saturday, according to local officials.
PTI has also reported arrests of several party lawmakers and preventive detention orders against dozens of workers under the MPO. Similar tensions have been reported in Islamabad, where the party plans to hold its September 27 march.
The government has vowed to stop the march, while the Islamabad High Court has ruled that political parties and their leaders do not have a lawful right to occupy public roads, highways, interchanges, toll plazas or government buildings in the capital.
