Fortis pioneers dual robotic kidney transplants in India

Bengaluru, June 26 (UNI) In a landmark advancement in kidney transplant care, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru has successfully performed complex, high-risk transplants under its TREAT program—Transformational Robotic Enabling Advanced Transplants—using simultaneous dual robot-assisted surgeries, an innovation rarely attempted in India.
In one such case, 17-year-old Sana, who suffered from a life-threatening antibody mismatch, underwent a dual robotic transplant on May 5, where two robotic systems operated in tandem—one for her brother Chand’s minimally invasive donor nephrectomy, and another for her own complex transplant. Thanks to this synchronized precision, Sana’s kidney began functioning within days. Both siblings were discharged in good health within a week.
Likewise, onMay 24, the TREAT program made headlines again when 59-year-old Chowdenahalli Kumar, suffering from end-stage kidney failure due to diabetes and hypertension, received a new lease on life after his wife Leelavathi stepped forward as a donor. Despite Kumar’s complex medical history, dual robot-assisted surgeries were successfully conducted. Leelavathi was discharged within four days, and Kumar’s recovery has since been steady.
Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Principal Director of Renal Sciences at Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, hailed the TREAT program as a “paradigm shift” in transplant care. “The TREAT program emphasizes the donor's well-being as much as the recipient’s. We are now able to handle donors with anatomical variations, obesity, and prior surgeries with far more safety, precision, and compassion,” he said.
He noted that with minimal pain, reduced hospital stays, and faster recovery times, TREAT addresses the deep emotional and physical toll of transplants—particularly for women, who form the backbone of donor networks in India.
