FSSAI suspends Seven Seas Hospitality licence over serious food safety lapses

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the food licence of Seven Seas Hospitality with immediate effect after an inspection uncovered multiple food safety and hygiene violations at its premises in New Delhi.
The regulator said the food business operator has been directed to stop all food-related activities for the duration of the suspension. Seven Seas Hospitality operates in the hospitality and event-management space and is associated with the Seven Seas Hotel in Rohini.
According to FSSAI, inspectors found serious lapses in hygiene and sanitation, including stagnant water, foul odour, unclean food preparation areas and inadequate housekeeping. The inspection also found several food items in poor condition, with fungal growth detected on tomatoes, papaya, jaggery and cashew nuts.
Other spoiled food products were also found at the premises. These included rotten capsicums and cooking oil that had turned black and was considered unfit for use.
The inspection highlighted deficiencies in the way food was being stored, particularly the segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. FSSAI said meat was not stored appropriately and noted instances of condensation from cold-storage units dripping onto food.
The regulator also flagged several infrastructure-related problems. These included refrigeration leakage, excessive ice accumulation, damaged plaster, inadequate cold-storage facilities and insufficient ventilation and lighting.
Pest-control conditions were another major concern during the inspection. FSSAI reported the presence of cockroaches and house flies at the food premises, along with deficiencies in sanitation and pest-management practices.
The inspection also found gaps in record maintenance and water testing. Around 74 kg/litres of food articles that did not meet the required standards were destroyed at the site, according to the regulator.
Seven Seas Hospitality recorded a compliance score of just 30 per cent during the inspection, which FSSAI classified under the 'non-compliance' category.
The action against Seven Seas Hospitality comes amid stepped-up enforcement by FSSAI and state food safety departments against hotels, restaurants and other food businesses over hygiene and food safety violations.
The regulator has also recently taken action against several e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, Flipkart India and Zepto, over alleged non-compliances involving areas such as product claims and the sale of prohibited products.UNI VK AAB
