Gandak flood breaks water-level records, NASA report confirms: Chaudhary

Patna, Oct 3 (UNI) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary on Saturday said the unprecedented flooding of the Gandak river this year and its extensive spread have now been corroborated by a scientific report published by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Chaudhary told news persons here that NASA had documented, through satellite imagery, the historic rise in the Gandak''s water level from Nepal to Bihar and the extensive inundation caused by the swollen river.
The Deputy Chief Minister said NASA''s Earth Observatory, in a report published on October 2, noted that the Gandak river had reached record water levels at several locations in Nepal and India, resulting in flooding across large areas.
According to Chaudhary, exceptionally heavy rainfall between September 24 and 27 in Nepal's mountainous Lumbini and Gandaki provinces caused the Gandak, known as the Narayani in Nepal, to swell rapidly. The heavy rainfall also triggered landslides and resulted in floodwaters spreading across large areas along the river.
In several locations, floodwaters reportedly overtopped embankments, while breaches were also reported, he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said a comparison of satellite images captured by NASA on September 20 and 29 provided a clear picture of the extensive spread of floodwaters and the areas inundated by the river.

Chaudhary said that, according to the report, the Gandak's water level at Devghat in Nepal reached 11.94 metres on September 27, the highest level recorded there since water-level measurements began in the 1960s.
In India, new record-high water levels were also recorded at several locations along the Gandak, including Bagaha, Dumriaghat, Rewa Ghat and Lalganj, he said.
He said the exceptionally heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Nepal had a significant impact on the Gandak's water level in Bihar, resulting in extensive waterlogging and flooding in several areas of West Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran and Muzaffarpur districts.

Chaudhary said the state government was continuously monitoring the flood situation, with relief and rescue operations being accorded priority in affected areas.
He added that scientific and satellite-based data were proving important in assessing the exceptional nature and geographical spread of the flooding.
