Govt working tirelessly to facilitate return of IDPs to their homes: Manipur CM

Imphal, Oct 5 (UNI) Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday said the State Government has been working to facilitate the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their respective homes since the formation of the new government on February 4.
Speaking at a programme held at the City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, Imphal, on Monday, the Chief Minister said the government had held several rounds of talks with representatives of civil society organisations (CSOs) to bridge the trust deficit that has emerged during the ongoing crisis.
The programme was organised under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan for distribution of benefits worth Rs 2.19 crore to eligible labour card holders, particularly IDPs, under the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board (MBOCWWB).
Khemchand Singh said living in relief camps was difficult and that being unable to return home was deeply disheartening.
He said the crisis had caused suffering among innocent people in both the hills and valley.
Highlighting the resumption of bus services on the Imphal-Guwahati route via Dimapur, the Chief Minister said the service had reduced the burden on students studying outside the State and sportspersons travelling for tournaments, particularly at a time when airfares remained expensive.
He said around 450 to 500 passengers were using the public transport service every day.
The Chief Minister said many IDPs had fled their homes with little or no belongings and the government was making efforts to meet their basic needs through various welfare schemes.
He said around 2,531 IDPs were currently receiving assistance through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and urged those who had not yet registered to do so with the concerned authorities to avail the benefits.
On Mission Pathshala, Khemchand Singh said the government was making efforts to ensure that its benefits reached IDP students.
He also said frequent meetings were being held with representatives of IDPs to address their grievances.
Rajya Sabha MP Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi said extending assistance and support to needy people remained a priority of the government.
She highlighted various welfare schemes aimed at empowering weaker sections and reaching beneficiaries at the grassroots level.
She also praised Chief Minister Khemchand Singh for his decision to travel to Jiribam district by road, describing it as an effort focused on the welfare of the people.
Under the Special Scheme for Financial Assistance for Education of Children Staying in Relief Camps, 2,531 beneficiaries received around Rs 1.42 crore.
In addition, eight beneficiaries received around Rs 19 lakh under the Immediate Assistance in Case of Accident (Accidental Death) scheme, while 194 beneficiaries received around Rs 58.20 lakh under the Natural Death Benefit scheme.
Tourism and Art & Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh and MLAs also attended the programme. UNI NS SAS
