Ganjam flood and landslide damage may exceed Rs 5,000 Crore: Odisha Congress

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das has urged the state government to immediately rehabilitate families affected by floods and landslides in Ganjam district and provide adequate compensation, estimating that the total damage could exceed Rs 5,000 crore.
On the second day of his visit to the flood-affected areas of Ganjam on Friday, Das, accompanied by a Congress fact-finding team, visited several severely affected locations across Asika, Bhanjanagar, Sorada and Sheragada blocks to assess the extent of the devastation.
During the visit, the Congress delegation met the families of those killed and injured in the landslide at Gidipabali. Expressing grief over the death of five members of a single family, Das conveyed his condolences to the bereaved relatives and extended financial assistance on behalf of the state Congress. The team also provided support to several displaced families and affected individuals.
Das also met the family members of a farmer who had allegedly died by suicide and expressed his condolences while extending assistance to the bereaved family.
The Congress team subsequently visited several flood-ravaged markets and commercial establishments, interacting with traders to assess the extent of their financial losses. According to Das, a preliminary assessment indicated that business establishments in Asika alone had suffered losses exceeding Rs 1,000 crore.
The delegation also expressed concern over the conditions prevailing at several relief centres. It reportedly found that the distribution of cooked food had been discontinued at some centres, while many rehabilitation facilities lacked adequate accommodation and basic amenities for displaced people.
Taking into account the extensive damage to agricultural land, businesses, residential houses, roads, livestock, electricity infrastructure and drinking water supply systems, Das estimated that the overall losses in Ganjam district could cross Rs 5,000 crore.
He further said that the proposed assistance of Rs 2,500 crore from the Centre would be grossly inadequate to address the requirements of the flood-affected population.
The OPCC president is scheduled to submit a memorandum to the Ganjam District Collector, highlighting the problems faced by affected residents and seeking immediate government intervention. He is also scheduled to visit several flood-hit areas of Gajapati district on Saturday.
The Congress has placed a series of demands before the state government for the relief and rehabilitation of flood- and landslide-affected people.
The party has demanded compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of every person killed in landslides. It has also sought compensation equivalent to at least 50 per cent of farmers' crop losses, calculated on the basis of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of the harvested produce.
Among its other demands are a complete waiver of all agricultural loans taken by farmers in Ganjam district and a complete waiver of examination fees for students affected by the floods.
The party has also urged the government to provide new uniforms, shoes, school bags and textbooks to students whose educational materials were damaged or lost in the floods.
Calling for immediate action, Das said thousands of families in Ganjam had lost their livelihoods, homes and valuable belongings due to the floods and landslides.
He stressed that the government must move beyond announcements and ensure timely relief, comprehensive rehabilitation and adequate compensation to all affected families.
