Odisha adds 318 PG medical seats, takes total to 938

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6 (UNI) In a major boost to postgraduate medical education and specialist healthcare services, Odisha has secured approval for 318 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats across 14 disciplines in its government medical colleges and postgraduate medical institutions, taking the state's total PG intake from 620 to 938.
The approval, granted by the National Medical Commission (NMC), marks a significant expansion of the state's medical education infrastructure and is expected to create greater opportunities for medical graduates to pursue specialised studies while strengthening the availability of specialist doctors across Odisha.
A major highlight of the expansion is the introduction of postgraduate medical courses for the first time in five government medical colleges, particularly in regions that have traditionally had limited access to advanced medical education.
The five institutions are Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital, Keonjhar, which has received approval for 44 PG seats; Government Medical College and Hospital, Sundargarh (22); Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput (28); Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College and Hospital, Talcher (32); and Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati Government Medical College and Hospital, Phulbani (27).
The expansion will also substantially increase postgraduate intake at several existing medical colleges.
Welcoming the development, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling described the expansion as a new chapter in Odisha's healthcare and medical education sectors, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Expressing gratitude to union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and the National Medical Commission, Mahaling said the increase in postgraduate medical seats from 620 to 938 was not merely an expansion of medical education but a historic step towards creating a larger pool of highly skilled specialist doctors in the state.
He particularly highlighted the significance of introducing PG medical education in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Koraput, Talcher and Phulbani for the first time, saying the initiative would promote regional equity and decentralise healthcare services.
The minister expressed confidence that the expansion would make quality specialist medical education and healthcare more accessible to people across different parts of Odisha.
The increase in PG seats is expected to strengthen the state's medical education infrastructure, provide greater opportunities for higher studies and research among medical graduates, and help address the growing demand for specialist doctors, he said
It is also expected to improve access to advanced medical treatment by strengthening specialist healthcare facilities in different regions, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to major urban centres for specialised care, the Minister said.
