Gomti river in spate in Lucknow; Low-lying areas inundated

Lucknow, Oct 4 (UNI) With the Gomti River in spate for several days, Lucknow is facing a flood-like situation in low-lying areas.
In Faizullaganj and adjoining localities, residents are grappling with water at their doorsteps as the river continues to swell.
The rising water level has swept away construction material worth approximately Rs 30 crore from the flyover under construction behind La Martiniere College in Gomti Nagar.
The water level rose so rapidly that the officials and workers overseeing the work couldn't even collect paper from the store.
The flood waters have inaundated some low lying portion of Bhaisakund crematorium leading to problems for the citizens coming to perform last rites of their near and dear ones.
According to officials on Sunday, the water level of Gomti has reached around 108.14 meters, 2.44 meters or about eight feet above normal.
On Saturday, the water reached the Hanuman Dham temple complex. The ancient Shani Dev Temple and the Laxman Mela grounds were also flooded.
Meanwhile, the Food Valley on the riverfront has been temporarily closed due to the rising water level in the Gomti River.
To manage the situation, all 10 gates of the Gomati barrage have been opened. This will help in quickly draining the water downstream while 48 outlets have been closed to prevent the river water from entering the city's drainage network.
According to Mukesh Vaish, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, water coming from Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, and Sitapur is reaching Lucknow.
Due to this, the Gomti's water level has increased despite the rain stopping. It is expected that the Gomti's water level may start decreasing from Monday as the water coming from the upper areas decreases.
Businessman Mantosh Srivastava said that shuttering material worth approximately Rs 10 crore, 5,000 liters of diesel, 12 oxygen cylinders, 20 drums of oil and lubricant, rations, gas cylinders, rebar, and other supplies were swept away by the water. Five generators and a diesel tanker also sank.
The water of Gomti has also reached inside the SEZ Cricket Stadium. Due to this, the SEZ Cricket Academy has been closed for the time being.
On the other hand, water has also reached outside the Ekana Stadium premises. To prevent it from reaching inside the stadium, the drain has been closed by filling it with soil.
Due to the rising water level of the Gomti river, the water level in the surrounding villages including Lasa, Bahadurpur, Sultanpur, Akadiya Mau of BKT tehsil has reduced a bit, but the problems of the victims have not reduced yet.
Around 30 boats have been arranged for the movement of the affected families and for providing relief to the people. Four relief camps and help centers have also been set up. Food and essential facilities are being provided to the affected people here.
DM Vishakh, along with Joint Police Commissioner Bablu Kumar, inspected the affected areas by boat for the second consecutive day on Sunday and took stock of the situation.
He interacted with the villagers and learned about their problems and gave instructions to not allow any kind of negligence in the relief work.
The DM stated that cooked food is being provided to those living in relief camps. Relief kits are also being distributed to affected families.
On the DM's instructions, health department teams have also reached the affected villages and distributed essential medicine kits and chlorine tablets.
The Animal Husbandry Department has arranged for green fodder and straw for the animals. Teams of veterinarians are reaching the affected areas and treating the animals.
Moreover, the District Magistrate inspected relief camps and disaster relief material storage centers to review the arrangements. Revenue, Health, and Animal Husbandry officials were deployed in the affected areas.
