Govt failure responsible for floods, relief operations should be conducted on war footing: CPI

Patna, Oct 3 (UNI) Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday alleged that the state government had failed to prevent the worsening flood situation in Bihar and demanded that relief and rescue operations be intensified on a war footing.
CPI Bihar state secretary Ramnaresh Pandey said heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal and the release of water from the Valmikinagar barrage had aggravated the flood situation in the state, affecting lakhs of people in six north Bihar districts: West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran.
He alleged that the state government had failed to check the flood disaster, claiming that thousands of houses had been submerged and more than two dozen people had died after drowning in floodwaters.
According to the CPI leader, crops worth more than Rs 25,000 crore had been damaged, while several embankments and roads had also been breached or washed away.
He further alleged that the government's relief operations had failed to meet the situation and that preparations undertaken before the floods had proved inadequate.
Pandey said Bihar was simultaneously facing the crises of floods and drought, but the Centre had not announced any assistance so far.
He demanded that the Centre declare both the flood and drought situations in Bihar as national disasters.
The CPI state secretary demanded that relief operations in the flood-affected areas be conducted on a war footing.
He also sought compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to the dependants of all those who died in the floods, construction of permanent houses for families whose homes were destroyed, and crop-loss compensation at the rate of Rs 50,000 per acre. UNI RS SAS
