Govt stands firmly behind athletes: Maha minister

Pune, June 22 (UNI) The Maharashtra government will stand firmly behind athletes by solving the problems faced by the athletes and organisations and will provide them with facilities, assured state Sports & Youth Welfare Minister Dattatray Bharane here on Monday.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare and the Maharashtra Olympic Association on occasion of Olympics Day at the Lady Ramabai auditorium of Sir Parshuram College here, he said that various athletes from the state have won medals in international and national sports competitions and the athletes should perform by remembering them and keeping their ideals in mind.
The minister said that late Khashaba Jadhav won the first medal for the country in the 1952 Olympic Games.
After that, Swapnil Kusale won the second medal in 2024 and Sachin Khilari won the medal in the Paralympic Games.
Various decisions have been taken to provide financial support to the medal-winning athletes of the state, to boost their morale, five percent reservation in jobs to maintain continuity in sports, direct appointment in government service, he informed.
In the year 2024-2025, 149 athletes have been directly appointed in government service, he said.
"Let us resolve to produce more and more Olympic athletes from every village and city. In the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in 2028 and 2032, the country's athletes should win more medals, and the state should have the biggest share in this," added the minister.
An Olympic building is being built at Balewadi and various facilities will be provided to the athletes, Bharane informed.
