Manipur remembers Olympians on Olympic day

Imphal, June 23 (UNI) Olympic Day was observed in the state by various organisations here on Monday.

As part of International Olympic Day, an event was held at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex organized by Manipur Olympic Association.
The theme of the program was "Move, Learn, Discover Together for a Better World".
Thangjam Arunkumar, MLA, President of Manipur Olympic Association, Sunil Elangbam spoke
about the Olympic movement in Manipur.
Arunkumar said he was honoured to attend the International Olympic Day at Khuman Lampak Olympic Bhavan, hosted by the Manipur Olympic Association under the theme “Move, Learn, Discover-Together for a better world”.
“Given Manipur's strong legacy of producing Olympians, particularly in sports like hockey, boxing, weightlifting, judo, and archery, it is essential that we continue to strive for excellence and achieve even greater success in sports,” he added.
The speakers remembered and felicitated Olympians on the occasion. Pangambam Nilakomol Singh India’s first Olympian from Manipur (Los Angeles 1984) started the movement in Hockey followed by Khetrimayum Thoiba Singh, Khadangbam Kothajit Singh, Kangujam Chinglensana Singh, Thokchom Anuradha Devi, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu – Captain, Indian women’s team (Rio 2016 & Tokyo 2020), Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma – Double Olympic bronze medalist (Tokyo 2020 & Paris 2024)
Boxing legend Ngangom Dingko Singh started the journey in Sydney 2000, followed by Soubam Suresh Singh , Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom – Bronze medalist, London 2012, Laishram Devendro Singh .
In weightlifting, Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi took 4th place at Athens 2004, followed by Thingbaijam Sanamacha Chanu , Ngangbam Sonia Chanu , Saikhom Mirabai Chanu – Rio, 2016, Silver medalist (Tokyo 2020), 4th place (Paris 2024).

Lourembam Brojeshori Devi was the first Manipuri woman judoka, Sydney 2000, followed by Khumujam Tombi Devi and Likmabam Shushila Devi was the only Indian judoka at Tokyo 2020
In Archery Laishram Bombayla Devi took part in three Olympics. So far Manipur has produced 19 Olympians and the medal winners being , Mary Kom – Boxing, London 2012, Mirabai Chanu – Weightlifting, Tokyo 2020 and Nilakanta Sharma – Hockey, Tokyo 2020 & Paris 2024.

Olympic Day was observed at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal, organised by Manipur Hockey to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympic Games. Govindas Konthoujam MLA, Thangjam Arunkumar, MLA and Manipur Hockey's Life-time President Ksh.
Thoiba Singh spoke about the Olympic journey in Manipur.
