One dead, police under attack in Tripura VC poll counting

Agartala, Oct 5 (UNI) One person died and 12 others were injured, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), during the violence that erupted in Tripura's Khowai district on Monday.
The upheaval occurred during the counting of votes for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections.
Reports indicated that violent clashes broke out outside the counting centres across various districts, resulting in the death of a man and injuries to at least 12 others.
Motilal Karmakar, a 57-year-old associated with Tipra Motha, died while being transported from Khowai to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala.
According to police, Karmakar sustained injuries during the altercations outside a counting centre and died en route to the hospital.
His wife, Anita Debbarma, has claimed that her husband, who held a leadership role within Tipra Motha, died from injuries inflicted by police during the disturbances.
The incident reportedly occurred amid a skirmish between supporters of Tipra Motha and the BJP during vote counting.
As tensions rose, supporters from both political factions gathered outside the counting centre. Tipra Motha leaders accused the police of using a lathi-charge during the clash, asserting that the use of force contributed to their supporters' injuries.
Police personnel also reported injuries, with DSP Arghyadip Laskar allegedly hurt by a slingshot (gulti) during the clash.
Several officers and members of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were also reported injured. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Monchak Ippar, was travelling in a convoy targeted while heading toward the Thalibari strong room.
At least 12 people, including women, suffered various injuries during the lathi-charge and required treatment at Khowai hospital.
Despite the escalating tension, police authorities have yet to address the media or issue a statement explaining the reasons behind the use of force, further fueling unrest in the Tulasikhar block area. UNI BB SAS
