Gulzar Houz fire: Need fire safety reforms, especially in Hyderabad’s heritage zones: FTCCI

Hyderabad, May 19 (UNI) Expressing profound grief and deepest condolences over the tragic loss of 17 innocent lives in the devastating fire accident that occurred at Gulzar Houz, Charminar, on Sunday morning, The Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) on Monday said that there is an urgent need for fire safety reforms especially in Hyderabad’s heritage zones and densely populated commercial areas.
In the incident, 17 members of a jeweller’s family including eight children, died after a raging inferno engulfed a three-storied building in Gulzar Houz.
In a statement, FTCCI Prsident Dr. Suresh Kumar Singhal, said, “We are heartbroken by this tragedy that has shaken the very soul of our city. The heartrending cry of the victims, including the final call for help from a trapped family member, should awaken every citizen and authority to the urgent need for fire safety reforms—especially in Hyderabad’s heritage zones and densely populated commercial areas.”

“As a responsible trade body committed to public welfare and urban resilience, FTCCI stands with the bereaved families in this unimaginable grief. We also appreciate the emergency responders who acted swiftly in extremely challenging circumstances,” he added.

In response to this tragedy, FTCCI will be organising a Public Seminar titled “Never Again: Safeguarding Hyderabad’s Heritage from Fire Disasters”—a dialogue with experts, civic authorities, and stakeholders to chart an actionable roadmap to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Our heritage structures and commercial zones must be preserved not only for their cultural value but for the safety of the lives they house. This is a wake-up call. Let us ensure that no more such cries for help go unanswered,” Dr. Singhal stated.
