Haryana CM Saini welcomes Rabi MSP hike, says it will boost farm returns, diversification

Chandigarh, Sept 30 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday welcomed the Centre's decision to increase Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season, saying higher support prices would improve returns to farmers and give a fresh impetus to crop diversification.
Saini thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union government for the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister.
The Centre has announced the highest absolute MSP increase of Rs 675 per quintal for safflower, followed by Rs 413 per quintal for rapeseed and mustard, Rs 390 per quintal for lentil (masur), Rs 136 per quintal for barley, Rs 83 per quintal for gram, and Rs 25 per quintal for wheat.
Following the revision, the MSP for wheat has been fixed at Rs 2,610 per quintal, while barley will fetch Rs 2,286, gram Rs 5,958, lentil Rs 7,390, rapeseed and mustard Rs 6,613 and safflower Rs 7,215 per quintal for the 2027-28 marketing season.
Saini said the decision would strengthen farmers' economic position and help ensure remunerative prices for their produce.
He said the increase was in line with the union Budget 2018-19 policy of fixing MSP at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The Centre has also said the latest revision is intended to ensure remunerative prices and encourage crop diversification.
According to the revised calculations, the expected margin over the all-India weighted average cost of production is the highest for wheat at 106 per cent, followed by rapeseed and mustard at 96 per cent, lentil at 92 per cent, gram at 59 per cent, barley at 58 per cent and safflower at 50 per cent.
Saini said the higher support prices for pulses and oilseeds would be particularly significant for Haryana as the state seeks to encourage farmers to diversify beyond traditional cereal crops.
He said higher MSPs would not only help farmers secure better returns but also encourage diversification towards pulses and oilseeds.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that Haryana's farmers would benefit from the revised support prices and continue to contribute significantly to the country's food security.UNI KK/NB AAB
