Sirsa, Oct 23 (UNI) Sirsa Police have arrested five men in separate anti-narcotics operations, recovering 34.089 kg of poppy husk and approximately 72.993 grams of heroin, officials said.
The seizures were made by the Anti-Narcotics Cell, CIA Sirsa, CIA Ellenabad and Rania Police teams during patrols and checking operations under a special campaign launched on the directions of Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan.
In the first case, the Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested Bhim Singh, a resident of Nejadela Kalan village in Sirsa district, after recovering 24.567 kg of poppy husk from two plastic sacks.
Police said the accused allegedly attempted to flee after spotting the team during checking in the Nejadela area.
He was apprehended, and the contraband was recovered during a search conducted in the presence of a gazetted officer.
In a separate operation, a team from Kiriwala police post under Rania Police Station arrested Ranjit Singh, a resident of Khiyali Ram Ki Dhani in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, and recovered 9.522 kg of poppy husk from a plastic sack he was carrying.
The accused was intercepted on the Kiriwala-Bani road after allegedly attempting to turn back on seeing the police vehicle.
In another case, CIA Ellenabad arrested Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakkhi, a resident of Dayalpur Mirza village, in the Rania police station area. Police recovered 60.075 grams of heroin from his car after he purportedly attempted to flee on seeing the inspecting team.
Significantly, two more men were arrested in separate heroin recovery cases. CIA Sirsa arrested Sunil Kumar, a resident of Sector 19, HUDA, Sirsa, with 7.009 grams of heroin.
In a separate operation, the Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested Pritam alias Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Bajigar Mohalla, Sirsa, and recovered 5.910 grams of heroin.
Cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the respective police stations, and further investigations are underway.
Police said the arrested accused would be questioned to establish the source of the drugs, their intended recipients and possible links to wider trafficking networks.
The Rania police team also plans to seek Ranjit Singh's police remand for further investigation.
