Haryana orders crackdown on unsafe Kuttu flour as Navratri demand rises

Panchkula, Oct 11 (UNI) The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Haryana, has been asked to intensify inspections and sampling of buckwheat (kuttu) flour and other fasting foods during Navratri, warning that violations of food safety standards will invite strict action.
FDA Commissioner Dr. Manoj Kumar has asked field officers to closely monitor sellers of kuttu flour and other foods consumed during fasting. The department has also issued an advisory to traders and consumers, cautioning that improperly stored, damp, stale or fungus-contaminated flour can cause food poisoning.
Consumption of contaminated flour may lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea and fever, the advisory said.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) standards cited by the department, kuttu flour must meet prescribed quality limits, including a maximum moisture content of 13 per cent. Limits have also been specified for extraneous matter, mineral matter, foreign-origin impurities and other food grains.
The FDA has directed traders to procure flour only from reliable suppliers holding valid FSSAI licenses or registrations. They must check the packing and expiry dates, batch numbers and condition of packets, and store the flour in clean, dry, well-ventilated places away from moisture, pests and chemicals. Sale of stale, foul-smelling or fungus-contaminated flour is prohibited.
Consumers have been advised to prefer sealed packs from trusted shops and check the FSSAI licence number and other label details before purchase. Flour showing an unusual smell, discolouration, lumps or signs of insects should not be consumed. Food prepared from kuttu flour should be cooked thoroughly.
The department has advised anyone experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or dizziness after eating such food to seek medical attention promptly and avoid self-medication.
