Haryana plans four cow sanctuaries to move stray cattle off roads; 22 shelters to reopen, 14 new ones proposed

Panchkula, Sep 21 (UNI) Haryana is moving to expand shelter space for stray cattle, with four cow sanctuaries under development, 22 defunct gaushalas set to be revived and 14 new shelters planned, as the state seeks to move homeless cattle from roads to safer facilities.
Mohan Lal Kaushik, Chairman of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, said after a review meeting in Chandigarh on Monday that the government was working with the Gau Sewa Aayog, gram panchayats and urban local bodies to house stray cattle in gaushalas and the proposed sanctuaries.
He said a cow sanctuary spread over 89 acres at Bhojawas village in Mahendragarh district was nearing completion, while similar facilities were being developed at Rajpura Khadar in Palwal, Bhuna in Kaithal and Sambhli in Karnal.
According to Kaushik, Haryana has around 707 registered gaushalas housing about 40,000 cattle. The remaining stray cattle would be identified and shifted to additional shelters through a special drive. To improve fodder availability, gram panchayats have been directed to provide at least 10 acres of grazing land to gaushalas, he said.
The government has also opened applications for fodder assistance, with registered gaushalas allowed to apply until October 14. Kaushik said the state has set a target of providing Rs 300 crore as fodder assistance this year, following which a six-month instalment would be released to eligible shelters.
Infrastructure is also being expanded to protect cattle from harsh weather. Proposals have been sent for construction of iron sheds at 200 gaushalas, with financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for each shed. Such sheds were constructed at 49 gaushalas last year, he said.
Kaushik said registered gaushalas would also be provided e-rickshaws to help transport injured and sick cattle for treatment and other essential services. The state is simultaneously working on cattle-breed improvement. Laboratories costing several crores of rupees have been established at the Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Hisar, and officials have been asked to accelerate work aimed at making better cattle breeds available to farmers.
A cattle research centre is also proposed at Sukhdarshanpur in Panchkula, where Panchgavya products would be developed. A newly constructed gaushala at Ratewali in Panchkula is to be registered shortly. Kaushik said the broader objective was to ensure that stray, injured and sick cattle receive shelter, fodder and care instead of remaining unattended on roads. UNI KK CDS

Six arrested for assaulting hotel worker in Gurugram; two cars, three sticks seized

Panchkula, Sep 21(UNI) Haryana Police have arrested six men for allegedly assaulting a hotel worker with sticks following a dispute over payment for food in Gurugram, a police spokesman said here on Monday.
The spokesman said the incident took place at around 9 p.m. on September 16 when the complainant, who works as a helper at a hotel, allegedly got into an argument with a customer who had come to collect food. The customer allegedly called his associates, who attacked the complainant and his companion with sticks, leaving the complainant seriously injured.

27-year-old man dies after honeybee attack in Panchkula forest

Panchkula, Sept 21 (UNI) A 27-year-old man died after being attacked by a swarm of honeybees while he had gone to collect firewood with two friends in a forest area near Pinjore in Haryana's Panchkula district, according to information provided by his family.
The deceased was identified as Raj Kumar, son of Manveer Singh, a resident of the labour colony at Rampur Seuri village. According to the family, Raj Kumar and his two friends had gone to the HMT forest area on September 18 to collect firewood when they were attacked by honeybees.
