Haryana Police arrest Telecom agent for supplying sim cards to cyber fraudsters

Panchkula, Oct 1 (UNI) Haryana Police have arrested a telecom point-of-sale agent from Kanpur for allegedly misusing customers’ KYC details and live photographs to obtain SIM cards without their knowledge and supplying around 50 SIM cards to cyber fraudsters, a police spokesman said here on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Vinay Sharma, a resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly earned around Rs 1 lakh by supplying the SIM cards to cyber criminals, the spokesman said.
His role surfaced during Haryana Police’s investigation into a Rs 1.71-lakh cyber fraud in which a Gurugram-based cooking oil manufacturer was allegedly cheated while trying to purchase 2,000 kg of peanuts.
According to the police spokesman, the complainant had contacted a purported peanut supplier through an acquaintance and was assured that 2,000 kg of peanuts would be delivered to Gurugram. Acting on the assurance, he transferred Rs 1.71 lakh to a bank account on January 29.
The alleged supplier continued to claim that the consignment had been dispatched, but the peanuts were never delivered. After realising that he had allegedly been cheated, the complainant approached Cyber Crime Police Station (West), Gurugram, on February 13 and a case was registered.
During the investigation, the Haryana Police cyber crime team traced a mobile number allegedly used in the fraud and subsequently arrested Sharma from Kanpur on September 30.
“Investigation revealed that the accused was working as a POS agent for Vi and allegedly misused customers’ KYC details and live photographs to issue SIM cards without their knowledge or consent,” the police spokesman said.
Police alleged that Sharma supplied these SIM cards to cyber fraudsters through associates. The Vi mobile number used in the Rs 1.71-lakh fraud was also allegedly supplied by him.
“During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had supplied around 50 SIM cards to cyber fraudsters and received approximately Rs 1 lakh in return,” the spokesman said.
Haryana Police are now probing the wider cyber fraud network, including the procurement and supply chain of the SIM cards and the role of other people allegedly associated with it.
