Haryana Police crack Rs 4.72-crore crypto fraud trail

Panchkula, Oct 1: Haryana Police have arrested two men for allegedly providing a bank account to a cyber fraud network that duped a Gurugram resident of more than Rs 4.72 crore through a bogus Bitcoin and USDT investment platform, a Haryana Police spokesman said here on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Gagandeep alias Kalu and Gurwind, both residents of Kunwari village in Hisar district, were arrested from their village on September 30 after investigators followed technical evidence and the banking trail linked to the fraud.
The spokesman said the complainant was approached via Telegram and WhatsApp with an offer to invest in a purported global Bitcoin/USDT trading platform that promised substantial returns.
The victim was directed to register on an online trading website, where profits were initially displayed to gain his confidence. Police alleged that once the complainant was convinced that the investments were generating returns, the fraudsters persuaded him to deposit progressively larger sums into different bank accounts.
He eventually transferred Rs 4,72,14,181 to accounts allegedly linked to the network.
The fraud came to light when the complainant attempted to withdraw his money. The platform's purported customer service blocked the withdrawal and allegedly demanded another Rs 1.25 crore, claiming the additional payment was required to restore or normalise his trading account.
The complainant approached police on January 15, following which a case was registered at Cyber Crime Police Station (South), Gurugram.
IPolice said Rs 2 lakh from the amount allegedly defrauded from the complainant had landed in that account.
“During interrogation, it was revealed that Gagandeep had arranged and opened the bank account and provided it to Gurwind on commission. The account was subsequently used for receiving proceeds of cyber fraud,” the Haryana Police spokesman said.
Police are now examining the transactions routed through the account and attempting to establish where the remaining money went and identify other people allegedly involved in the operation.
The spokesman said the two accused were being questioned about the financial trail, proceeds of the fraud, other suspected participants and the wider cyber fraud network.
Further investigation is underway, Haryana Police said.
