Haryana Police intensifies anti-drug drive; 2 held in Sirsa with heroin

Panchkula, Sep 27 (UNI) In a sweeping display of coordinated law enforcement, the Haryana Police have struck simultaneously at street-level drug peddlers, illicit pharmaceutical channels, and the shadow economy of tobacco and hookah vendors encircling educational institutions across the state, a police official said on Sunday.
The operations, spearheaded by senior district commanders, have already taken a heroin supplier off the streets, dismantled a cache of over 1,000 intoxicant tablets, and triggered a stringent regulatory warning to shopkeepers and university authorities alike, signalling that the battle against substance abuse is being fought as much through preventive vigilance as through hard arrests.
In Sirsa, the dragnet closed around a young man whose sudden attempt to escape betrayed him.
Acting under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Deepak Saharan, a joint team comprising Drug Inspector Keshav Vashishtha and the Anti-Narcotics Cell, Sirsa, was deployed near Kisan Chowk when they spotted a youth approaching from the opposite direction. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the suspect abruptly turned and tried to flee.
The team swiftly apprehended him and conducted a lawful search, recovering 1,060 intoxicating pills from his possession that are commonly misused for narcotic purposes.
The accused was identified as Nitin, son of Krishna Chand, a resident of Gali Number 4, Friends Colony, Sirsa. Police said the recovered tablets and the arrested accused have been transferred to Drug Inspector Keshav Vashishtha for further proceedings.
Authorities have also issued a stern warning that any medical establishment or pharmacy operator found complicit in the illegal supply of such intoxicants will face severe legal action.
In a parallel strike in the same district, the Crime Investigation Agency staff at Ellenabad intercepted a heroin courier in the Rania police jurisdiction, dealing another blow to the local narcotics supply chain.
According to CIA Ellenabad in-charge Sub-Inspector Sandeep Singh, the police team was conducting a routine patrol and checking operation near Thadi Mohar Singh when a pedestrian coming from the front suddenly broke into a run after spotting the police vehicle. Officers gave chase and overpowered him on the spot.
In the presence of a gazetted officer, a search of the suspect yielded 75.81 grams of heroin, a consignment police estimate to be worth several lakh rupees.
The accused was identified as Gurmeet, son of Daleep Singh, resident of Dhani Satnam Singh, Tehsil Rania. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Rania police station, and the investigation has been handed over to the local police team.
The official said investigators will seek police remand for the accused to unearth the source of the heroin and map the entire distribution network he was supplying. Additional members of the narcotics ring are being traced, and further arrests are anticipated.
While special teams hit dealers on the streets, the Haryana Police leadership has simultaneously moved to choke off the supply lines that reach young minds.
In Hisar, Superintendent of Police Siddhant Jain, has ordered all station house officers to enforce strict surveillance around educational institutions, including Guru Jambheshwar University, other university campuses, government and private colleges, and coaching institutes, after receiving reports that vendors were openly serving hookah to students and that a tobacco product called "Coolip'' was being peddled near institutions in the Adampur area.
