Haryana power utilities remove 4,222 redundant roadside poles

Panckula, Oct 14 (UNI) Haryana's power distribution companies have removed 4,222 redundant electricity poles from roadsides across the state, but 2,221 poles — more than a third of the 6,443 identified — remain standing, with the government setting a December 31 deadline to complete the drive aimed at eliminating unnecessary roadside obstructions and improving public safety.
The progress report reveals a sharp disparity between the two state-owned distribution utilities. Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has completed over 91 per cent of its assigned work, while Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has removed less than a third of the redundant poles identified in its jurisdiction.
According to Managing Director Vikram Singh, UHBVN has removed 3,333 of the 3,651 poles identified, leaving 318 pending. DHBVN, however, has cleared only 889 of its 2,792 identified poles, with 1,903 still awaiting removal.
Overall, the two utilities have completed approximately 65.5 per cent of the statewide exercise.
Within UHBVN, the removal drive has been completed in the Ambala, Panchkula, Yamunanagar, Karnal and Kurukshetra circles. Among the circles reporting pending work, Kaithal has 57 poles awaiting removal, followed by Jhajjar with 35, Sonipat with 25 and Panipat with 22.
The removal exercise has been completed in DHBVN's Faridabad, Palwal, Gurugram-2 and Sirsa circles.
The statewide drive was initiated following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in March, when concerns were raised over electricity poles that continued to occupy roadside spaces despite no longer serving an operational purpose.
The distribution companies were directed to identify such structures district-wise, dismantle them and deposit the recovered material in their respective stores in accordance with prescribed procedures.
The exercise is intended to clear unnecessary obstructions from roadsides, reduce potential safety hazards and improve the management of electricity distribution infrastructure.
Vikram Singh said progress was being reviewed regularly and the officials concerned had been instructed to ensure that the remaining work was completed by December 31.
With DHBVN accounting for nearly 86 per cent of the statewide backlog, the southern utility faces the bulk of the remaining work as the deadline approaches.
